The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was confirmed for cancellation on CBS after an announcement on July 17, and it has saddened a ton of late-night show stars, including John Oliver.

On Sunday, July 20, the Last Week Tonight host was questioned about Colbert’s cancellation by the Associated Press.

“Obviously I love Stephen, I love the staff, I love that show,” Oliver said. “It’s incredibly sad.”

Oliver mentioned that while he’s partly excited to see what Colbert will do over the next ten months, he still believes the cancellation is “terrible, terrible news for the world of comedy.”

Though Oliver has been a late-night host himself, he’s also been a consistent guest on Colbert’s Late Show for over 33 years.

“Late-night shows mean a lot to me,” he said. “Not just because I work in them, but because even growing up in England, I would watch Letterman’s show which of course became Stephen’s show and think what a glamorous world that was.”

Oliver said that being on Letterman’s or Stephen’s show has always been “one of the most fun things.”

At the end, he said it’s “very, very sad news,” but added that he’s looking forward to whatever Colbert does next.

“...because that man will not stop,” Oliver concluded.
