American filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has finally addressed the rumour about a significant Guardians of the Galaxy star being cast as Lex Luthor in the latest Superman film.

The gossip in town was that before casting Nicholas Hoult in his debut DC Universe film, Bradley Cooper was almost cast for the role.

Cooper played the hero's father, Jor-El, whereas the first live-action Jor-El was played by Nelson Leigh in 1948's Superman film serial, with later cinematic portrayals by Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe.

Later, Cooper joins this hierarchy of superhero stars to play Superman's birth father.

However, in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn revealed that this was not how Cooper was originally planned to appear.

"I did talk to Bradley about it,” the Superman director said. “We had a short conversation and at the end, [...] I did want Lex to be someone that was more [a] contemporary of Superman's."

Gunn further added that Lex Luthor is important to Superman and the upcoming sequel of the DC Universe; therefore, he explained that a younger actor would probably be better.

Although the filmmaker was honest about his actor friend.

"Bradley would have been a great Lex,” he said. “I mean... Bradley's great at everything."
