Drake is back in the spotlight with his latest track, What Did I Miss? that follows his intense rap battle with Kendrick Lamar.
The 38-year-old rapper calls out those who distanced themselves from the rapper during the heat of the battle in this song.
Drawing lyrical inspiration from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, Drake channels Thomas Jefferson returning from Paris, using that metaphor to parallel his own return to the music scene.
Verses like “I travelled the wide, wide world and came back to this” indicates his disillusionment and hints at betrayal by friends and allies who took sides with Kendrick or stayed silent during the conflict.
The Canadian rapper and the American rapper have been in a rap feud since 2013.
It started with Drake's response to Lamar's verse on the Big Sean song Control. In 2024, the feud escalated with Lamar’s lyrics in the song Like That as he rejected the notion of a big three, saying the top spot in hip hop was “just big me” instead of J.Cole, Drake, and Lamar.
Although the 5-time Grammy Award winner didn’t mention any names, he reveals fractured circles and politics surrounding the hip-hop industry.
‘Views’ is the most commercially successful album of Drake, sitting at the top in the Billboard 200 for thirteen weeks. It also lead the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 for eight weeks.
