Indie film darling Dakota Johnson, starring in the new romantic comedy Materialist alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, is currently busy promoting her new film.
In a recent appearance on Hot Ones, Sean Evans asked Johnson why she feels “Hollywood is so risk-averse,” as she has observed the industry “up close and personal.”
“I think it’s hard when creative decisions are made by committee,” Johnson said, “and it’s hard when creative decisions are made by people who don’t even really watch movies or know anything about them, and that tends to be what’s occurring a lot.”
The Fifty Shades franchise star thinks that Hollywood is “a bit of a mess” because studios are just remaking similar, previously successful projects instead of trying new things.
“When something does well, studios want to keep that going,” the producer and actress said, “so they remake the same things. But humans don’t want that. They want fresh, they want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things. So I don’t know, I guess it’s all just a bit of a mess right now, isn’t it?”
Dakota Johnson founded the production company TeaTime Pictures. She started the production house with former Netflix development executive Ro Donnelly.
