Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein received a 13-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, with stars Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth in attendance.
If there was one dream Del Toro carried since childhood, it was to make two films. The first, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, became a success in 2022.
The second is his long-awaited Frankenstein, a contemporary adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, which the filmmaker has been fixated on ever since watching Universal’s 1931 version starring Boris Karloff.
It’s safe to say Del Toro is now two for two.
When he brought his lifelong passion project to Italy for its world premiere, Elordi, Isaac, and Goth joined him on stage. The film earned a rapturous ovation, recording the longest applause of the festival so far.
As the cheers continued, Isaac, who plays the brilliant yet unhinged scientist, and Elordi, who portrays his tragic creation, were visibly moved to tears.
Del Toro warmly greeted the crowd, exchanging hugs with Elordi and Isaac. A visibly emotional Elordi even received a kiss on the cheek from Isaac during their embrace.
Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein (Isaac), a gifted but arrogant scientist who creates life (Elordi), only to unleash tragedy that destroys both the creator and his doomed creation.
The film arrives in theatres on 17 October and on Netflix from 7 November, while the Venice International Film Festival continues through 6 September.
