Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter where she opened up about leaving the series, The Handmaid’s Tale.
The actress played the role of Emily/Ofglen in the Hulu show for four seasons, which will see the end of its sixth season on May 27.
About the trauma her character has experienced, she remarked, “It was deeply upsetting to even imagine Emily going through something like that—being captured, powerless, with no say over her body. I was actually offered the role and when I read the pilot script, I immediately said yes. Somehow, Bruce just knew I had Ofglen in me.”
She announced that she would be leaving the series in 2022, saying that “after much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid's Tale at this time.”
“I am forever grateful to [creator] Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily,” Bledel continued, “and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
Along with her, one of the original cast members, Max Minghella’s time on the show has also come to an end through his character, Nick’s death.
About his ending, the actor remarked, “I think it’s one of our best seasons, and that doesn’t happen all the time. I’m really happy that we got to finish up in a way we can all feel really proud of.”
