American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is currently in the second week of his sex trafficking trial.
The charges being made against him include sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution but he has pleaded not guilty to them all.
The first week of his trial included a bombshell testimony from his former girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura who he dated for 11 years.
The claims made by her included those of abuse, extreme control, forced sexual encounters with escorts and being made to participate in his “Freak Offs.”
The case has been hugely discussed, being closely followed by journalists, news outlets and social media influencers. Regarding, the last category, journalists have been issuing warnings as one wrote:
“Remember, if you want to know what’s going on in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ very serious racketeering and sex trafficking trial, follow reporters in the courthouse and ignore the people gleefully reporting every sexual detail like this is the Pornography Olympics.”
But what are the thoughts of the general public on the whole case? This tweet may sum it up perfectly:
“The Diddy case is so dark and disgusting, I can’t believe he got away with that behaviour for so long.”
As well as: “Instead of pretending famous Black male abusers like Diddy and Tory Lanez are victims of some racist conspiracy and not their violent and criminal actions. You could support Black people who are wrongfully imprisoned and political prisoners due to racism.”
Always a place for nuanced discussions, people have also started conversations on Diddy’s daughters, as one user mused, “Initially, I didn't feel sorry for Diddy’s kids like many others.
But my opinion has changed, I feel for Diddy’s daughters because if he can abuse & exert control over the adult women in his life (including their mom). There’s no telling what he did to them behind closed doors.”
Others seek to criticize the ignorance towards his past past victims, “Diddy is on trial for sex trafficking and in jail, but never served time for shooting Natania Reuben in the face for a reason.
Reuben is a Black woman, and Cassie is mixed-race. The reporting of her experiences as misogynoir is colorism and an erasure of Diddy’s BW victims.”
The 9th day of Diddy’s sex trafficking trial has begun today, on May 22.
Diddy achieved his wealth through a mixture of his work in the music industry, business deals as well as personal branding. He also expanded into fashion through his brand Sean John, going on to make money through Ciroc vodka as well.
