Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexual assault by a Paris court and handed an 18-month suspended sentence.
The charges relate to accusations of groping on the set of Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters in 2021.
Depardieu did not attend the sentencing which was set against the backdrop of at least 20 public allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour, many emerging only in recent years.
The case is being seen as a landmark #MeToo moment in France, a country where the film industry was slow to confront such issues.
The 76-year-old is currently in Portugal filming Fanny Ardant’s Ela Olhava Sem Nada Ver on São Miguel Island.
Ardant, a long-time friend, remains one of the few public figures in the French film world to support him.
This marks Depardieu’s first screen role since 2022, after a fall from grace linked to the wave of allegations, all of which he has denied.
The veteran may face a second trial soon over rape allegations by actress Charlotte Arnould, dating back to 2018.
Depardieu is known for the 1999 fantasy movie Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar. He has also worked on joint projects between Hollywood and the French movie industry, such as the 1998 film The Man in the Iron Mask which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
