The BBC has found itself red-faced after admitting one of its flagship radio shows failed to uphold proper journalistic standards in the aftermath of Prince Harry’s explosive interview.

The Duke of Sussex sat down with BBC News last Friday, just hours after losing his Court of Appeal battle to reinstate his full police protection while visiting the UK.

During the emotional interview, Harry didn’t hold back, branding the ruling a “calculated stitch-up” and accusing the establishment of turning its back on him.

But what followed on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the next morning has now come under fire, from the BBC itself.

The programme featured commentary from security expert Richard Aitch, repeating claims made by Harry, without properly fact-checking or representing all sides.

In a rare move, the broadcaster has now admitted it “failed to properly challenge” allegations made by the Duke and didn’t give adequate voice to Buckingham Palace or the Home Office.

“This was a lapse in our usual high editorial standards,” the BBC said on its corrections and clarifications site.

They added: “We should have reflected the Home Office’s statement and given the view of Buckingham Palace.”

What did Prince Harry say in his explosive BBC interview?

In his BBC sit-down, Harry expressed frustration and pain, saying: “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious.”

However, the comment about his father’s health, paired with claims that the Palace played a role in stripping his security, has left royal watchers fuming.

Although Buckingham Palace has chosen not to comment directly on Harry’s remarks about King Charles, they released a blunt statement in response to the court ruling: “All of these issues have been examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, with the same conclusion reached on each occasion.”
