Dave Allen, the legendary bassist from the post-punk band Gang of Four, devastated fans following his death at 69-years-old.
Allen’s passing was announced on Sunday, April 6, by former bandmate Hugh Burnham in a post on the Gang of Four’s official Instagram.
The late star’s cause of death is not yet confirmed but Burnham informed fans through the caption that, “He was at home with his family. Dave had endured the early-onset of mixed dementia for some years which has been a heartbreaking time for his wife Paddy, his children, and close friends."
The co-founder of the British rock group Shriekback was a prominent figure in the post-punk music scene and was an inspiration to fans and peers alike.
Allen’s fans flooded the comments under the heartfelt post to extend their condolences and express their love for the deceased member.
“Such an advocate for artists coming from a place of empathy in navigating inevitable shifts in technology. A bright light. Deepest condolences to family,” one fan wrote, with one heart and one broken-heart emoji.
Another added, “Very sad news, rest in peace David [red heart].”
A third chimed in, “Oh Dave...damnit. thank you for the meetings and the talks and of course for your music. Will always remember you” followed by a broken-heat emoji.
Notably, the Gang of Four are set to perform their final tour The Long Goodbye in Boston on April 2020 to mark the retirement of the band.
