Meghan Markle and Prince Harry continue to embrace their Sussex titles, even years after stepping down as senior royals. However, Meghan’s recent revelation that she has officially changed her last name to Sussex has sparked speculation about possible retaliation from the royal family.
According to The Mail, Palace insiders suggest that if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to publicly criticize the royal family, their titles could be in jeopardy.
“It was revealed that an Act of Parliament may be needed to take away the titles from the pair,” a source explained, indicating that official measures would be required if the Palace decided to strip them of their Sussex titles.
The couple has previously made waves with their tell-all projects, including their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview, their Netflix docu-series Harry & Meghan, and Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, all of which detailed their grievances with the monarchy.
This latest development comes shortly after Meghan spoke about the deep significance of the Sussex title in an interview with People magazine.
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together. It means a lot to me,” she said.
Meghan publicly clarified her name change during her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, when she corrected her friend Mindy Kaling, stating that she now goes by Meghan Sussex.
She explained that since her family uses Sussex as their last name, she wanted to align with her children. While some royals use Mountbatten-Windsor as a surname, Prince Harry never has. Meghan’s decision follows royal traditions that have been in place for decades.
