Margot Robbie said yes to 'stereotypical' Barbie role over THIS reason

Margot Robbie had some reservations about starring as the eponymous character in the upcoming Barbie film.

In a new cover story interview with Time, the actress revealed she only agreed to take on the role due to Mattel’s idea to cast different versions of Barbie in the film. "I don't think I would have wanted to attempt to make a Barbie film," she affirmed.

Although the toy company has always promoted diversity in the physical appearance of the character, it has certainly expanded its horizons in terms of inclusivity in the past few years.

Robbie continued: "I don't think you should say, 'This is the one version of what Barbie is, and that's what women should aspire to be and look like and act like.'"

Thus far, Mattel has developed around 175 different Barbie dolls having different skin tones, body shapes, and hair types.

The company COO and president Richard Dickinson reflected on the idea of casting the Birds of Prey star as the "Stereotypical Barbie," in order to anchor the film. "It is an opportunity to get audiences who haven't followed Mattel's latest updates into theaters," he shared.

"Of course she looks like Barbie," Dickson told Time. "But they're all Barbie. It's the perfect cast to express what Barbie is today. And Margot is the bridge."

The film, which is slated to open in theatres on July 21, delineated the many versions of Barbie and Ken with a star-studded cast, which includes Sharon Rooney as Lawyer Barbie, Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Author Barbie, and Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, and Scott Evans are among the actors playing the boy toys.
