Despite being part of Hollywood for nearly four decades, Ethan Hawke has never landed his dream role.
Speaking to the Interview magazine, the Strange Way of Life star opened up about being envious of stars who get to voice characters in animated films.
“My whole life as an actor I’ve dreamed of getting some email saying, ‘You can audition for the voice in one of these,'” Hawke told his Good Lord Bird co-star Daveed Diggs, who voices Sebastian the crab in the live-action iteration of Little Mermaid.
“I watch all these movies and I’m like, ‘Oh, I could do that guy’s voice,’” the actor added.
Despite not being featured in an animated film, Hawke has lent his voice to a number of projects, including narrating novels and performing in the Audible podcast series, Fishpriest.
In 2022, the Sinister actor raved about voice acting and said: “As a performer, the power of the voice is an art form unto itself. And I love sound design.”
“When you first go to acting school, one of the first classes they take you to is voice and speech,” Hawke continued at the time, “and about what can be accomplished.
"The really great theater directors I’ve worked with cast people based on their voices. It’s a strange thing when you don’t like the way something sounds, and that’s not on purpose,” he added.
