Ethan Hawke says Uma Thurman divorce was ‘humiliating’

Ethan Hawke sat down for an interview where he opened up about his very public divorce from Uma Thurman 20 years ago.

Sharing children Maya, 27, and son Levon, 23, with the Kill Bill star, he remarked about the scrutiny, “It’s humiliating. It’s almost humiliating even when they’re saying positive things.”

Considering the pair met during a project, he said to GQ about starting relationships at work, “There’s a certain intimacy to the work that we do. Imaginative intimacy. It’s such a high. It feels dangerous and thrilling.”

"It doesn’t have any connection to the dailiness of real life. That’s the danger of it," he continued.

After their separation, when Thurman was asked about Hawke, she remarked, “I cannot participate in anything critical about my children’s father. I just need to keep peace. I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t said one mean thing, and I’m not going to start now. It’s terrible for my family.”

Hawke went on to marry Ryan Shawhughes in 2008, having two daughters together, Indiana, 14, and Clementine, 17.

Thurman got engaged to Arpad Busson in 2008, splitting briefly in 2009 before having a daughter in 2012. They separated for a final time in 2014.
