Avengers newcomer Channing Tatum opened up about how he changed his Cajun accent for Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday.
Tatum is reprising his role as Gambit in the new movie, which he debuted as the Marvel superhero in last year’s Deadpool and Wolverine.
The highly anticipated MCU movie, which is currently in production, includes Tatum back in his shoes alongside Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth, and various other Marvel actors.
Speaking for a new Variety cover story, Tatum joked that in Deadpool and Wolverine, nobody could understand Gambit’s thick Cajun accent. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool gags at one point: “Who’s your dialect coach? The Minions?”
Luckily, Gambit will be easier to understand in Avengers: Doomsday, as Tatum assured, “I’m not gonna go full Cajun.”
The actor revealed that the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, want the theme fully in Deadpool.
“When Gambit gets serious, when he drops the Mardi Gras mask, that’s when things really matter,” Tatum said.
He previously told Access Hollywood that his Gambit accent in Deadpool & Wolverine was a deliberate choice. “There was very little improv. The Cajun dialect is very particular,” he added.
“I grew up in Mississippi, and my dad is from New Orleans, so it’s something I was always around, but never performed. There are certain isms that are very Cajun, but we actually wanted it to be somewhat unintelligible. That was kind of the joke,” he explained.
