Anne Hathaway has opened up about the unconventional preparation behind her latest role in the upcoming film Mother Mary, revealing that she turned to pop sensation Charli XCX for inspiration.
The Oscar-winning actress plays a fictional global pop star in the A24 psychological drama, a role that required her to step far outside her comfort zone.
Speaking at the film’s premiere, Hathaway shared that connecting with Charli XCX helped her better understand the realities of being a modern music icon, from the intense performance demands to the vulnerability that comes with fame.
Beyond consultation, Charli XCX also played a creative role in the project, co-writing several original songs featured in the film alongside artists including FKA twigs and Jack Antonoff.
According to People, Hathaway herself contributed to the songwriting process, further immersing herself in the character’s world.
To fully embody the role, Hathaway underwent extensive preparation, including working closely with choreographer Dani Vitale.
Moreover, she highlighted the physical endurance required of pop performers, as well as the emotional exposure involved in delivering such high-energy performances on a global stage.
Despite the deep dive into the music industry, Hathaway admitted that pursuing a real-life pop career is not in her future, joking that the experience gave her a newfound respect for those who do it professionally.
Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery and co-starring Michaela Coel, is set for release in April 2026, marking one of Hathaway’s most ambitious and transformative roles to date.
