Selena Gomez shared that Disney put pressure on her to be the best role model

Selena Gomez opened up about her experience as a Disney star and revealed that the entertainment giant banned her from saying a certain phrase.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the singer shared that she was "explicitly" warned against saying the phrase "What the hell?" despite being a sophisticated child star.

"I wasn’t a wild child by any means, but I was on Disney, so I had to make sure not to say ‘What the hell?’ in front of anyone," she said.

She went on to explain that the move put her "on pressure" to be "the best role model" she could possibly be back when she starred as Alex Russo on Disney’s hit TV show Wizards of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012.

"Now I think being the best role model is being honest, even with the ugly and complicated parts of yourself," she shared.

The admission comes in tangent to her recent documentary with Apple TV+ called My Mind and Me where she laid bare her mental health struggles and admitted that at one point in her life she was "haunted by the idea that people would always associate" herself to Disney.

"I definitely feel free of it," she said.

"Sometimes I get triggered. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my past, it’s just that I’ve worked so hard to find my own way. I don’t want to be who I was. I want to be who I am."
