K-pop supergroup BTS will be enlisting in South Korea’s mandatory military service, putting an end to the years-long debate on whether the group deserved to be exempted.

In a statement by the group’s agency, Hybe, it said on Monday that "the members of BTS are currently moving forward with plans to fulfil their military service".

The statement added that "as each individual embarks on solo endeavours, it's the perfect time and the members of BTS are honoured to serve".

"Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October," it added. "Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans."

For the unversed, all able-bodied men under the age of 30 must perform two years on military service and refusing to do so is a crime which can lead to imprisonment and societal exclusion.

Exemptions are given to elite athletes, like Olympic medalists, and classical musicians, which excludes the pop group.

Based on the announcement it is safe to say that fans will not be seeing the group together until 2025.
