Oprah Winfrey stuns fans with shocking birth name revelation

Oprah Winfrey has shared the surprising story behind the name she has been known by for decades.

The media icon revealed during her appearance on Keke Palmer’s podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, that her birth certificate carries a different name.

"It was Orpah from the Bible," she said, explaining that her original name was changed because people around her struggled with its spelling.

The actress then asked what made her change the name to Oprah, to which the award winning host replied, "It's not what made me. I was a kid. Nobody knew how to spell it."

"So, it turned out on my birth certificate, it's Orpah," she explained. 

"And then people started calling me Oprah. And so it’s just the difference between the P being before the R or after the R. So once they started with Oprah, that's it."

She later revealed that she learned about the difference between her birth name and the name she was called around the age of 20.

Moreover, she shared that Orpah was a name from the Bible’s story of Ruth and Naomi, where Orpah went back while Ruth remained with Naomi.
