Whoopi Goldberg tells 'The Odyssey' critics to 'stay home' amid backlash

Whoopi Goldberg has hit back at conservative critics targeting Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, dismissing objections to the film's diverse cast and urging those unhappy with the casting choices not to watch it.

During a recent episode of The View, Goldberg addressed criticism directed at actors Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong'o, both of whom have faced online attacks over their roles in the epic adaptation of Homer's classic poem. 

Some conservative commentators questioned the casting, with criticism focusing on Page's gender identity and Nyong'o's portrayal of Helen of Troy.

Responding to the backlash, Goldberg questioned why critics were so concerned about a film they claimed they had no intention of seeing.

"If you don't want to see it, then don't go see the damn movie," she said, adding that movies are fictional and that audiences are free to decide what they watch.

According to Daily Mail, Goldberg also argued that actors should be judged by their performances rather than their personal identities.

Her co-hosts echoed the sentiment, defending inclusive casting and noting that acting has long involved performers portraying characters different from themselves. 

Moreover, they also criticized online commentators who condemned the film before watching it.

Despite the controversy, The Odyssey has enjoyed a strong commercial debut, grossing more than $260 million globally during its opening weekend while earning positive reviews from critics.
