Anne Hathaway has revealed her third pregnancy came as a complete surprise.

The 43-year-old actress admitted that she and husband Adam Shulman were left stunned when they discovered they were expecting another baby.

The Odyssey star is already mum to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, six, but confessed the couple never expected things to happen quite so quickly this time around.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Anne laughed as she recalled the moment they realised baby number three was on the way.

"Oh, my gosh. It's amazing," she said.

"We knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked. We were so shocked it went this way, so we're calling this one our buzzer-beater."

Host Seth Meyers, who shares three children with wife Alexi Ashe, offered some light-hearted parenting wisdom, joking that once a family grows to three children, parents simply have to enjoy the ride.

"It goes on like autopilot," he quipped.

Every day you're like, 'Oh, new episode.'"

The Devil Wears Prada actress embraced the comparison, joking that she was ready to welcome a "new cast member" to the family.

Away from her growing brood, the Oscar-winning star is also preparing for the release of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, where she stars alongside Tom Holland and Matt Damon.

Speaking recently about the blockbuster, Anne sweetly admitted she hopes her real-life children grow up to be just like Tom, who plays her on-screen son Telemachus.

"Tom is like a dream son," she said with a smile, leaving the actor laughing beside her.

The Princess Diaries star also praised director Christopher Nolan, revealing the cast were determined to give their very best because none of them wanted to let the acclaimed filmmaker down, describing the epic production as one built on mutual respect and admiration.
