Pop fans were left heartbroken after legendary Eurodance group Aqua announced they are officially calling it quits after more than 30 years together.
The Scandinavian chart-toppers behind the iconic 1997 anthem Barbie Girl confirmed the emotional news in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, revealing they will no longer continue as a live band.
The trio, made up of Lene Nystrøm, René Dif and Søren Rasted, said the decision had been made with “love and gratitude” after decades of performing together around the globe.
“After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band,” the group wrote, thanking fans for their unwavering support through the years.
Formed in 1995, Aqua quickly exploded into worldwide fame with bubblegum dance hits including Doctor Jones, Turn Back Time and Cartoon Heroes.
Their debut album Aquarium sold millions and became one of the defining pop records of the late 90s.
Fans flooded social media with emotional tributes, with many calling the split “the end of an era”.
One devastated supporter wrote: “Your music will live forever.”
The timing of the split comes as a shock, especially after Aqua enjoyed a major comeback in 2023 when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled Barbie Girl for the hit track Barbie World from Barbie.
Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the blockbuster film introduced Aqua’s music to a whole new generation.
