Kanye West, who is known as Ye, has been ordered to pay damages after losing a copyright dispute over Hurricane.
As per reports, the jury said the rapper didn’t have permission for an unreleased song and still performed it at an Atlanta show in front of 40,000 fans in 2021.
According to the Courthouse News, “I know exactly who my fans [are],” the Grammy winner previously told the court, while also admitting he later removed the sample after realising it had not been cleared.
He was ordered to pay around $176,000 personally, while his companies were also hit with an additional $262,000 in damages.
Moreover, the outlet revealed, the four musicians behind the original sample brought the case through Artists Revenue Advocates, calling the verdict a win for independent creators.
Meanwhile, the musician's team downplayed the ruling, pointing out that the lawsuit initially sought $30 million in damages.
Notably, the Hurricane, which featured The Weeknd and Lil Baby, went on to win a Grammy despite the legal controversy surrounding it.
