Dua Lipa hits Samsung with $15M lawsuit

Dua Lipa has initiated a US$15 million legal action over claims her image was used in a commercial campaign without her consent.

The pop star claims Samsung Electronics used her photograph on TV boxes sold nationwide without her permission, sparking a legal battle in California federal court.

The US Central District Court of California filing shows the case centers on an image titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” registered with the US Copyright Office.

Her legal team mentioned that the use went beyond licensing rights, potentially giving consumers the impression of an official endorsement.

The filing stated that Samsung benefited from her global recognition to boost sales.

According to the filing, a cease and desist was sent last year urging the company to end sales and take it off shelves, however, it remained available in stores.

Notably, Lipa is seeking US$15 million in damages, along with a court order and legal fees, saying the issue has hurt her image and brand deals.
