Robert Irwin has opened up about how he still turns to his late father, Steve Irwin, for guidance, more than 20 years after the Crocodile Hunter’s tragic death.
The 21-year-old TV star revealed in a tearful interview on Anderson Cooper’s All There Is podcast that he often asks his dad how to “move forward” in life.
The wildlife conservationist revealed that he feels closest to his late father when he’s out in the wild, surrounded by nothing but nature.
Alone in the bush, he often senses a comforting presence, as if his dad is wrapping him in an invisible hug.
In those quiet moments, he finds himself speaking to Steve, asking how to take the next step in life and move forward without him.
He explained that, while his father’s presence is felt constantly in everyday life, the most comforting moments come when he is alone.
“With my dad always being this constant thread in my life and people always talking about him, sometimes one of the nicest things is to just sit… in nature and I just kind of let it all go,” he added.
The Dancing With The Stars winner admitted that his “greatest fear” is forgetting what his dad felt like.
“For me growing up, my greatest fear – and it still is my greatest fear – is forgetting what he feels like or what he felt like,” he confessed, crediting his mum Terri for keeping Steve alive in his memory.
