James Taylor has revealed which songs from his extensive discography he considers best, putting them neatly in a top five list.

The 77-year-old released his latest album American Standard in 2022 while his iconic self-titled one came out in 1968 and the singer’s favourites seem to be leaning towards the ones from his youth.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host asked the legendary musician to reveal his list, like he does with most guests on the show.

In response Taylor said, “They told me you were going to ask that question,” pulling out a small notebook from his pocket, noting that this was a difficult task.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer offered explanations with each pick, which were listed in no particular order.

Taylor kicked things off by naming Mean Old Man, which earned him praise from The Beatles singer Paul McCartney, with the next one Millworker being one of Bruce Springsteen’s favourites.

The iconic Sweet Baby James from the titular 1970’s album was next, and the fourth pick was the one that was complimented by another icon, Bob Dylan, with Carolina In My Mind closing off the list.

Notably, internet users took to social media to discuss that he did not mention his breakthrough single Fire and Rain.

“Oh come onnnn where is Fire and Rain???” one internet user wrote as a second one added, “No Fire and Rain? That’s gotta be number 6.”
