Hollywood heavyweights are going head-to-head as the BAFTA Film Awards race officially kicks off and it’s Paul Thomas Anderson who’s storming ahead.

Anderson’s politically charged action thriller One Battle After Another has emerged as the clear frontrunner, racking up a whopping 14 nominations, including acting nods for five of its stars.

Hot on its heels is Ryan Coogler’s blues-soaked vampire epic Sinners, which scored 13 nominations, while Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s high-energy Marty Supreme each bagged 11.

The best film showdown will see One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Norwegian tearjerker Sentimental Value battle it out for the top prize.

Moreover, the acting categories are just as star-studded.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Michael B Jordan and Ethan Hawke are among those vying for best leading actor.

While Jessie Buckley is tipped as the favourite in a fiercely competitive leading actress race that also includes Emma Stone, Kate Hudson and Renate Reinsve.

Supporting roles brought further love for One Battle After Another, with Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn all nominated.

The ceremony, hosted by Alan Cumming, will take place in London on February 22, with winners closely watched ahead of the Oscars on March 15.

With BAFTAs known for spotlighting overlooked talent and adding a distinctly British flavour,  this year’s awards are shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable yet.
