Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s lack of representation at the 2026 Academy Awards for Wicked: For Good shocked a lot of internet users and the reason for the snubs has reportedly been disclosed.
The duo’s press tours for the film, in which they would get emotional and appeared codependent, rubbed a number of netizens the wrong way, and apparently the voters from the Academy are also included.
As per the Daily Mail, one voter stated, “The movie wasn’t that great. The two have amazing on-screen chemistry but spent most of the movie apart.
They added, “I was also just completely turned off by their promotional performances. They creeped a lot of people out and in their rush to feel authentic, came off as cosplaying.”
Another voter dished similar thoughts, restating that the sequel wasn’t as good and that Ariana and Cynthia’s red carpet appearances in which the former would get anxious and the latter would have to intervene, were also avoided this way.
Notably, these remarks must be taken with a grain of salt because Academy voters are typically anonymous and information regarding the voting is highly confidential.
Moreover, industry analysts emphasise that the criteria does not factor in off-screen relationships or press tour dynamics, and the focus is strictly on the performances.
The Eternal Sunshine Tour begins on June 6, 2026 in Oakland, California.
