Stephen Colbert is making a surprise hosting return to TV screens one day after his show aired its last episode.

The 62-year-old had teased his return during the last episode of his star-studded finale, and noted that he was happy to be back.

On Friday May 22, the comedian made an appearance on Michigan public access TV’s Only in Monroe, taking over hosting duties for an hour, discussing local news, interviewing guests and doing comedy bits.

"Since I was last here in Monroe, Michigan, I spent 11 years as the primary host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, which came to an end last night," Stephen began.

"It's been an excruciating 23 hours without being on TV, so I am grateful to be able to be here on Monroe Community Media before they also get acquired by Paramount,” he added.

The former late night host was supported by celebrity guests such as Jeff Daniels and Jack White of The White Stripes.

Stephen also took digs at his previous network CBS during the broadcast which also featured Eminem and Steve Buscemi.

Notably, the Comedy Central alum had foreshadowed the move during his farewell episode by saying that his audience will probably see him next at a public access station in Monroe.
