Mike Campbell, a former Seattle Mariners pitcher and first-round draft pick, has died at the age of 61.
Campbell left behind a legacy that stretches far beyond the baseball field.
The team announced the news on social media, saying, "We are saddened by the passing of Seattle native and former Mariners pitcher Mike Campbell. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones."
Reportedly, Campbell died on Monday at his home in Kirkland, Washington. Notably, the cause of death is still pending.
Campbell's family confirmed the tragic news in a statement on Friday night as officials investigate the cause of death.
“With profound sadness, the family of Mike Campbell announces that he passed away suddenly on December 15,” his family said in the statement.
“Mike grew up in Alki and attended West Seattle High School and Newport High School in Bellevue and the University of Hawaii.
“Mike realized his childhood dream in 1985 when he was drafted by the hometown team, the Mariners.
“He pitched for the M’s, Rangers, Padres, and Cubs during his baseball career.”
“Mike will be remembered for his friendly, easy-going way, making people laugh, and as truly one of the nicest people you could hope to meet,” they continued.
“He had a passion for travel, going often to Kihei, Hawaii (his favorite place), golfing, and spending time with family and friends.”
Campbell reportedly died at his home in Kirkland, Washington.
