Universal Pictures is already looking forward to the future of the Wicked franchise following the massive box office success of Wicked: For Good.

Michael Moses, the studio’s chief marketing officer, told Vulture that plans are “underway” to expand the magical world of Oz, though whether that will take the form of another film or a television series hasn’t been finalized.

“Because of Wicked’s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe,” Moses said. “Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”

The comments follow a recent hint from Stephen Schwartz, who composed all the songs for the original musical.

Speaking to The Ankler, Schwartz revealed he’s been working on a new project alongside Wicked book writer Winnie Holzman.

“I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete, but there are other aspects that could be explored,” he said. “Gregory Maguire, the original novelist, has several books, for example. But there’s another idea that Winnie and I are discussing: not a sequel, but an adjunct. Let me put it that way.”

With Universal eager to keep the Oz universe alive, fans may soon see new stories branching out from the iconic witches’ world, though exactly how and when remains a mystery.
