Kate Middleton, Jessie J turn emotional as they discuss their cancer battles

Kate Middleton and singer Jessie J shared a deeply moving moment backstage at the Royal Variety Show, bonding over their personal battles with cancer.

Jessie J revealed to the Princess of Wales that she had been diagnosed in June, prompting the emotional exchange.

The singer told the royal: “I just had breast cancer,” before adding, “I just want to give you a hug, cancer really puts life into perspective.”

Jessie performed I’ll Never Know Why during the show, a new song written for her late bodyguard Dave, who died by suicide in 2021.

Kate told her: “Such a moving song.” Jessie J replied: “It is such an important conversation. I just miss him and I want to help others.”

She also mentioned speaking with Prince William about how essential it is to support men dealing with mental health struggles and to encourage them to open up.

Jessie J explained that she deliberately performed in a black hoodie and sweatpants to represent someone living with depression.

“They don’t want to get up in the morning, put on a fancy dress or wear make-up,” she said. “They’re just wearing their comfies on the sofa.”

Reflecting on the emotional moment with Kate, Jessie added: "Mum to mum, who has just recently gone through cancer, I just wanted to give her a hug. We acknowledged that it's something that is not easy to go through, especially in the public eye."

Jessie J also revealed that William asked about collaborating to promote open conversations around mental health, saying: “He would love to get me involved. They are interested and know how important it is to share the message.”
