Prosthetic reveals Dwayne Johnson transformation as Mark Kerr

The Oscar-winning prosthetics artist Hiro revealed that transforming Dwayne Johnson into Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine was surprisingly effortless.

In the upcoming film, Johnson transforms into real-life MMA icon Mark Kerr, spending nearly two hours in the makeup chair each day. The process involved creating the distinct cauliflower ears, a custom brow piece, and other facial prosthetics, along with concealing his trademark tattoos to complete the fighter’s gritty look.

“The first thing you notice on Dwayne is how big his eyes are, and how gentle he looks. Mark is the opposite,” Hiro described. “The heavy brow bone affects how his eyes look.”

Hiro further explained that he had to be cautious, as the eyelid is soft and delicate. “Any pressure affects how an actor expresses themselves,” he said. “Dwayne needed freedom to move.”

So, the prosthetics artist created a chamber that was fixed to The Rock’s eyelid.

“It’s 1 to 2 millimetres, and that was glued to him. And it moves with him, almost like natural skin,” Hiro said, adding that technology was involved to mark perfection.

“When I did the facial scan, I scanned him with his eyes open, then half-closed, and then with closed eyes,” he explained. “In the end, I sculpted a mould that was a hybrid of all the different stages.”
