Taylor Swift’s new track Cancelled has sparked a frenzy among fans, with many convinced the song is aimed squarely at former bestie Blake Lively.
When the 35-year-old pop sensation dropped the tracklist for The Life of a Showgirl, most assumed Ruin the Friendship would address the pair’s rumoured falling-out.
But instead, Cancelled is the one Swifties can’t stop dissecting, and the lyrics are far from subtle.
The Blank Space hitmaker and the Gossip Girl star were once Hollywood’s golden girl duo, with the singer even weaving the names of Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ children into her songs.
Notably, the first signs of strain appeared as the 38-year-old actress’s feud with It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni hit the headlines.
In leaked messages, Lively appeared to call Swift her “dragon,” and Baldoni’s camp sensationally claimed she even threatened to spill a decade’s worth of private chats unless the Eras Tour hitmaker spoke up for her.
A Simple Favor actress's lawyer slammed the claims as “categorically false,” but the damage was done.
Now, Swift’s lyrics read like a pointed response.
“At least you know exactly who your friends are / They’re the ones with matching scars,” she sings, before slyly adding, “If you can’t be good then just be better at it / Everyone’s got bodies in the attic.”
But rather than a takedown, some fans believe the track is a complicated portrait of a friendship scarred by scandal with the Lover singer offering solidarity as much as shade.
