American television host Jimmy Kimmel was caught up in late-night chaos this September when ABC briefly pulled his hit show Jimmy Kimmel Live! following his remarks on the killing of Charlie Kirk.
The 57-year-old comedian has now revealed the nerve-wracking phone call that informed him of the shutdown and it happened, of all places, in the bathroom.
Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Kimmel explained: “I was in my office, typing away, when ABC called. I had five people around me, so the only private place was the bathroom.”
“They said, ‘We want to take the temperature down. We’re concerned about what you’ll say tonight, so we’re taking the show off the air.’ I said, ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea,’ but they voted, and I lost,” he continued, recalling the surreal conversation.
He admitted he feared Jimmy Kimmel Live! was done for good.
“I thought, that’s it, it’s over. I’m never coming back,” he said, noting that his pale-faced reaction had his wife comparing him to Jim Gaffigan."
Notably, the temporary shutdown even drew cheers from then-US President Donald Trump, who later admitted he couldn’t believe ABC reinstated Kimmel.
Fortunately for fans, the show returned on September 23.
