Reese Witherspoon foresaw a radically changed future for moviemaking due to the shifting viewing habits of audiences.
In an interview with The New York Times about Apple TV+’s The Morning Show Season 4, the multihyphenate star noted social media’s role in reshaping the filmmaking industry.
“I noticed my kids weren’t going to the movies,” Reese said. “I had teenage kids. I went to the movies every Friday and Saturday night. Kids don’t go to the movies.”
The entrepreneur and actor then explained that people are declining to watch movies in theatres with their kids.
“You’ve got to go where the audience is, not lament the fact that they didn’t show up or have what I call ‘old-school-itis,’ which is like, Well, in my day,” she continued.
Reese further expanded on how the current generation has a different mindset and approach to content consumption, and how it will consequently impact the filmmaking industry in the coming years.
“Well, it just doesn’t work that way! Attention spans are shifting. The way we make movies is going to change radically in the next two to three years,” Reese stated.
