Royal watchers were left surprised when the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie arrived solo at the funeral of the Duchess of Kent on Tuesday, but there’s a very specific reason Prince Edward was not by her side.

The Duke of Edinburgh is currently overseas, carrying out an official solo tour in Papua New Guinea before heading on to Japan, where he will later reunite with Sophie.

While abroad, Edward is representing King Charles at a number of major events, including a dawn flag-raising ceremony and a State Dinner.

He is also set to present new Regimental Colours to the First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment and award the 50th Independence Anniversary King’s Medals to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the country.

But Edward wasn’t the only royal missing from the sombre service.

Queen Camilla was also forced to withdraw due to illness, sparking concerns about her ability to carry out her full schedule for the upcoming State Visit.

Buckingham Palace confirmed: “With great regret, Her Majesty The Queen has withdrawn from attendance at this afternoon’s Requiem Mass for The Duchess of Kent as she is recovering from acute sinusitis. Her thoughts and prayers will be with The Duke of Kent and all the family.”
