King Charles was reportedly forced into urgent talks with Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness after photos of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with him sparked political panic.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were pictured smiling alongside Holness at the One Love film premiere in Kingston in January 2024.
The appearance immediately raised eyebrows, with speculation that the Jamaican leader had personally invited the couple.
But according to Theresa Roberts, Jamaica’s Ambassador for Culture and Arts in the UK, this wasn’t the case, and the photo caused major embarrassment.
Speaking to the Mail, Roberts explained that Holness “couldn’t believe how much stick he got” for appearing to “cosy up” to Harry and Meghan, when in fact the couple had been invited by Paramount CEO Brian Robbins and his wife Tracy James, not the Prime Minister.
She revealed that Holness was so concerned about the optics that he made urgent contact with King Charles to clarify the situation.
Roberts said: “The government were really annoyed. The prime minister doesn’t want to be involved in royal politics abroad. He wants to focus on business at home.”
The King, who remains Jamaica’s head of state, was assured that Holness had “nothing to do with” the Sussexes’ appearance, and that the photograph was purely coincidental.
