Sophie Turner started out as a child actor, and she knows firsthand how fame can affect young stars. That’s why she has shared her concerns for the new Harry Potter child actors.
HBO is rebooting the iconic Harry Potter franchise into a TV series.
The Emmy-nominated actress first rose to fame at just 14 years old when she played Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. In a profile with Flaunt, Turner opened up about how social media negatively impacted her career during those early years in the spotlight.
“I think social media was just really becoming a big thing after I started on Game of Thrones, so I got a couple of years of peace and quiet and then I had to adjust. It had such a profound impact on my mental health, like more than I could tell you,” she said. “It almost destroyed me on numerous occasions.”
Turner went on to share her advice for the young actors stepping into J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, which includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
“I look at the kids who are about to be in the new Harry Potter and I just want to give them a hug and say, ‘Look, it’s going to be okay but don’t go anywhere near [social media],’” she added. “Stay friends with your home friends, keep living at home with your family, make sure your parents are your chaperones — it’s so important to have that grounding alongside the big, crazy stuff that you do.”
