Titanic is one of the most iconic movies of all time that shot the careers of both main leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
The movie is based on the tragedy of the Titanic ship that sank in the North Atlantic ocean on April 15, 1912 during its maiden voyage after colliding with an ice berg.
While the tragedy itself is real, the story of Leonardo and Kate’s characters, Jack and Rose, is fictional yet one of the most beloved love stories in Hollywood history.
It has now been revealed that that the role of Jack Dawson, the poor itinerant travelling on the ship, almost went to another Oscar winner, Matthew McConaughey.
However, Matthew lost the role because he refused to do one thing as advised by the filmmaker James Cameron.
Film producer Jon Landau’s posthumous book, The Bigger Picture, explains what happened during his audition that made him lose the role.
Matthew and Kate were doing a screen test together to assess their chemistry on-screen when the actor did the scene with a Southern accent. James advised him to try something else.
The actor denied his request and said “No. That was pretty good. Thanks”, which cost him the part.
Matthew McConaughey won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his 2013 movie Dallas Buyers Club.
