As Meghan Markle celebrates her 44th birthday today in Montecito, California, it appears that birthday wishes from the royal family may be few and far between, with one notable exception.

According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, Meghan is unlikely to hear from most of her in-laws amid the continued rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family following their departure from royal duties in 2020.

“I don’t think Meghan should hold her breath for birthday messages from the Royal Family,” said Bond.

“Though it may well be that Princess Eugenie, and possibly Beatrice, will send a present or a card.”

Eugenie, who is widely believed to be one of the few remaining royal allies of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has maintained a friendly rapport with the couple over the years.

Her recent appearance at Royal Ascot alongside Misha Nonoo, a close friend of Meghan’s, suggested the bond remains strong.

Traditionally, the royal family shares birthday messages only for working royals or when non-working members reach milestone ages ending in a 0 or 5.

Meghan’s last public birthday greeting from the royal family came in 2021 when she turned 40.

Back in Montecito, Meghan is expected to spend the day privately with Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

Bond added that Harry, still “head over heels in love,” is likely to plan something special, perhaps a romantic dinner, a beach gathering with friends, or even a sunrise yoga session.
