Years before Marvel hired Pedro Pascal to stretch his arms as Reed Richards, Ioan Gruffudd starred as the character in the 2005 original Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Ahead of the 2025 box office release Fantastic Four: First Steps, the previous films were critical washouts, and each grossed just over $300 million worldwide.
Recently, speaking with Vulture, Gruffudd recalled a scene from Fantastic Four where Reed briefly transforms into Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to impress Sue Storm.
The scene was cut from the MCU’s First Steps, and Gruffudd couldn’t comprehend why.
“I don’t know why that didn’t make it into the film,” the actor said. “Paying homage to the great Hugh Jackman was quite a thrill because I absolutely love him as an actor and his Wolverine.”
Gruffudd said that he’s glad the scene existed in one of the Fantastic Four movies.
“That was a reshoot,” he recalled. “I was in Vancouver on a soundstage and Jessica was in New York, so we weren’t actually together, but we look perfectly in sync.”
The interviewer from the outlet joked that Gruffudd could brag about having played both Mister Fantastic and Wolverine.
To which Gruffudd laughed and said, “For a brief second, yes. That’s a good pub-quiz question.”
