Julia Garner sat down for an interview on the SmartLess podcast where she opened up about her role as Madonna in a biopic.
Speaking to hosts Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, she claimed that the film is “supposed to still happen.”
About how she got the role, the actress remarked, “It just came about… like I knew that they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it.”
To prepare herself, she asked herself what Madonna would do, “Which is like convince you that she deserves… to be in this room. And I owned it. I was like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.’”
News of her casting came out in 2022, fresh off her success in the Netflix series Inventing Anna, reportedly being Madonna’s first pick to play her.
It was then reported by Variety in 2023 that Universal Pictures had decided to stop the project.
