Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest instalment for the Phase 6 franchise, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, marks a successful first day at the US box office.

Matt Shakman’s directed movie earns the second-biggest opening of this calendar year so far.

Fantastic Four made $57 million from the combined preview screenings and showings across 4,125 cinemas on Friday (25 July), as per Variety.

These stats place First Steps second to A Minecraft Movie, which had the biggest opening day of the year at the US box office with $57.11 million in April.

Marvel’s movie surpassed DC Studios' recent hit Superman, which made $56.1 million on its opening day on 11 July.

This opening marks the best first day for a Marvel Cinematic Universe release since Deadpool & Wolverine dominated the box office 12 months ago, making $205 million (£160m) at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

However, expectations are that First Steps can beat Superman’s $125 million (£93m) three-day opening earlier this month.

Marvel’s other movies released this year weren’t as impactful, including February’s Captain America: Brave New World, which grossed around $88 million (£65m) during its opening weekend, while May’s Thunderbolts brought in around $74 million (£55m).

Fantastic Four: First Steps is Marvel’s best opening day of the year.
