American filmmaker and DC head James Gunn explained that one squirrel scene in the latest Superman received explosive backlash and addressed fans’ perspectives.
The new DC Universe Superman has lighthearted qualities and hopeful themes of the Man of Steel. Therefore, David Corenswet’s Superman focuses on minimising collateral damage in every battle, even if it means diminishing his public image.
Focusing on this imagination, the director created a scene where Superman saves a squirrel while the town is under attack.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Gunn admitted that he didn’t expect a mixed reaction to the scene.
The director said the scene was “heatedly debated,” as many viewers raised questions about why Superman would spend time saving a squirrel amidst a large group of people being in danger.
“Saving the squirrel. Heatedly debated. Some audience members didn't... ‘Why is he saving a squirrel?’” Gunn said. “‘Cause it's a cute little adorable squirrel that was about to be crushed by a tail.”
Adding to his statement, he said that there were a lot of “squirrel haters” — not just a few people.
However, the scene reflects the core attribute of the Man of Steel. Despite the mixed reaction from the audience, it reinforces that Superman holds a persistent belief: every life matters, no matter how small.
