Queen Camilla may carry herself with royal grace at public events, but behind the scenes, she’s apparently just as impressive, and even more relatable, than many royal watchers realize.
As the Queen celebrates her 78th birthday, top British screenwriter and author Daisy Goodwin is offering a rare glimpse into Camilla’s true character, and it’s winning fans over.
Speaking exclusively to Express UK ahead of the London run of her new play By Royal Appointment, Goodwin couldn’t help but praise Camilla’s warmth, humour, and passion for championing causes like domestic abuse awareness and literacy.
"I'm very pro-Camilla," Goodwin gushed. "She's been through a lot, and she's rocking it; she's doing it so well."
Goodwin especially highlighted the Queen’s passion project: The Queen's Reading Room, a charity Camilla founded in 2021 to promote reading and literacy.
"I think her Queen's Reading Room initiative is amazing," Goodwin said, adding that she’s attended some of Camilla’s receptions and had personal conversations with her about books.
"She really reads! She's brought a different flavor to the monarchy, a really good one. The Royal Family has traditionally been all about sport and racing, but to have a royal figure who champions reading, it’s fantastic."
Her praise comes just as Queen Camilla prepares to host the third annual Reading Room Festival, but this year, there’s a twist.
Instead of taking place at Hampton Court Palace, the event is heading to Chatsworth in Derbyshire from September 19-20.
The festival promises a star-studded lineup including Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding, Bridgerton author Julia Quinn, romance legend Dame Jilly Cooper, comedian Richard Osman, historian Peter Frankopan, and gardening icon Alan Titchmarsh.
In a nod to Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary, the festival will also feature a special open-air screening of Pride and Prejudice in the stunning Chatsworth gardens.
Queen Camilla’s personal love of literature, and her efforts to share that passion publicly, is making a mark, and according to Goodwin, it’s exactly the kind of modern touch the monarchy needs right now.
"I'm very pro Camilla, and I think she's amazing and has been a very good thing for the monarchy," Goodwin concluded.
