Queen Camilla is celebrating her 78th birthday early, and in historic style. On July 16, King Charles appointed his wife as Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom, making her the first woman and first royal ever to hold the honourary naval title.
Camilla’s appointment was commemorated aboard the HMS Astute submarine in Plymouth, where she joined crew members to mark the vessel’s record-breaking 15-year first commission.
The Queen, who has sponsored HMS Astute since 2007, beamed as she inspected a Guard of Honor and accepted a Royal Navy salute before joining a garden party with crew and families.
The honorary title, created in 1513 by King Henry VIII, was formally bestowed by King Charles, an early birthday gift ahead of Camilla turning 78 tomorrow.
In a heartfelt speech, Camilla praised the submarine’s extraordinary record, noting its stealth during US Navy warfare trials and applauding the crew’s dedication and professionalism.
“It is those of you serving in her who ensure that she is much more than the steel of her pressure hull,” she said.
Her historic appointment deepens her long-standing ties with the Royal Navy, where she also serves as Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Medical Service and Naval Chaplaincy Services.
Camilla’s busy week included a glamorous appearance at last week’s state banquet and a moving visit to a children’s hospice, proving she’s celebrating her milestone birthday with purpose and style.
