Real-life action hero Tom Cruise pushed all the boundaries for The Final Reckoning of the high-octane sequel to Mission: Impossible, featuring scenes from the highest altitudes to the deepest underwater moments.

In a recent episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cruise took fans behind the scenes of the diving sequence in the movie, where Ethan Hunt infiltrates a submarine.

Cruise revealed that it was an enormous set, and what appears to be a lake is actually the biggest water tank in the world, created specifically for the movie.

He said that during the 20-minute underwater sequence, the submarine was rotating, and he was wearing a diving suit that weighed over 100 pounds underwater.

Meanwhile, he couldn’t see clearly underwater due to the interior lighting, and they had to develop a lot of technology related to cameras and survival. They even repurposed equipment from Fallout scenes to ensure the underwater sequence’s success.

“A lot of times I cannot see because of the reflection of the light,” Cruise explained. “So I would go in kind of blind, spend a lot of time on set figuring things out as we were planning the shots. Then, when I’m doing it, I have a hard time. Plus, the suit, when it’s wet, increases in weight by about 125 pounds.”

Cruise said he has been preparing for these kinds of stunts for years—even decades. Since he is both producing and acting in the movie, he has to maintain an intense workout routine.

“I have a gym. And it’s called the pain cave,” Cruise said. And if anyone wants to sign up, they have to be motivated enough.

The Oscar-nominated actor also shared that he breathed in his own carbon dioxide during the submarine sequence because of limitations with his diving gear.

Finally, Cruise applauded the U.S. Navy, which helped them with the underwater scene, and thanked the servicemen present on the show.
