Netflix’s go-to modern romance lead, Sofia Carson, has returned to yet another on-screen romance story on Netflix, My Oxford Year.

My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris and starring Carson as Anna and Queen Charlotte star Corey Mylchreest as Jamie, is based on the 2018 book by Julia Wheelan.

The story revolves around Anna, an ambitious young American woman who gets admitted to her dream university, Oxford. The academically driven girl’s life takes a turn when she meets a local and her professor, Jamie.

Both characters share an interest in poetry and literature, which brings them closer.

Sofia Carson’s interest in bringing My Oxford Year to life

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Grammy-nominated artist revealed that after acting in Netflix’s Purple Hearts, she met with Marty Bowen and Laura Quicksilver at Temple Hill, and that’s where everything started.

“I, of course, was very familiar with their work,” Carson said about Bowen and Laura. “They’ve brought to life some of the most beloved love stories of our time, from Twilight to The Fault in Our Stars. And so, in our meeting, Marty pitched wanting to bring this story to life with me as a producer and to star as Anna.”

Carson said she was moved by the offer, and when she read the script, “it was just the easiest yes.”

“I fell so instantly in love with Anna and Jamie’s love story, and with their world of poetry and literature,” she said. “And it was just a beautiful love story — the kind of love that changes you.”
