After starring in onscreen romance roles in Netflix’s Purple Hearts and The Life List, Sofia Carson returns in a brand-new bestselling book adaptation, My Oxford Year.

Although the Grammy-nominated singer has portrayed memorable onscreen romances, this time her new film is a revival of the classic love story.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Carson opened up about filming the warm and romantic love stories, and how My Oxford Year felt to her.

“There’s a certain level of escapism that comes with falling in love with a love story that is so beautiful to be able to offer that, and this one in particular just felt timeless,” Carson shared with THR. “It felt like it had been a while since I had seen a classic and timeless love story brought to life for this generation.”

My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris and starring Carson and Queen Charlotte star Corey Mylchreest, is based on the 2018 book by Julia Wheelan.

The story revolves around Anna, an ambitious young American woman who gets admitted to her dream Oxford University. The academically driven girl’s life takes a turn when she meets a local and her professor, Jamie.

Both characters share an interest in poetry and literature, which brings them closer.

“It’s like these two people see each other for who they are for the very first time,” Carson said. “I think that’s one of the most beautiful parts of this film, that they fall in love through poetry. They fall in love through literature.”
